Stanley Wayne MartinApril 30, 1928 ~ May 3, 2017 (age 89)
Stan Martin was born into a family of railroaders in McCook Nebraska on April 30, 1928. He was the son of Fred and Katie Martin and the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters. He started dating his future wife, Erna Coady Martin in junior high and they danced their way through high school, while playing football, basketball for the Cardinals. After graduating from Oxford High School he worked for the CB&Q railroad. Stan and Erna were married in Oxford, NE on October 26, 1949.
They moved to Denver Colorado with the railroad, where the light of his life, his daughter Sheri Lou was born. They lived there for several years but decided to move to Texas for family health reasons and job opportunity. They settled on the north side of Houston, living in Tomball, Willis and Conroe. During that time he worked for Reliable Life Insurance as a Sales Agent and Sales Manager when he was not taking Sheri fishing. They lived in the Dallas area, Austin, Rosenberg, Sherman-Denison, Tulsa and Allen. Most recently he lived in Parker, CO.
They welcomed Larry Pennington into the family when he married Sheri in 1980. They had a son, Mark Wayne Pennington in 1986 and from then on, Stan and Erna took job opportunities with Reliable to stay nearer to their prized grandson. Favorite memories are of Stan and Mark going through the tackle boxes looking at all the lures and then going to the lake to try them out.
After retiring from the insurance business, Stan wrestled with health issues while watching his grandson grow, especially going to innumerable baseball games. He was a strong willed person, beating cancer twice. Married to Erna for 67 years he was fond of saying he “had been married all of his life!” Together they enjoyed dancing and watching Nebraska Cornhusker football games. In 2016 he became a proud Great Grandfather when Jacob Wayne Pennington was born. Stan celebrated his 89th birthday on April 30th, 2017 and passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 3rd in Parker, CO.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Katie (Walters) Martin and his 7 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Erna, daughter Sheri Lou, son-in-law Larry, Grandson Mark and great grandson Jacob. Respecting his wishes, there will be a private service for the family and his ashes will be spread in Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to contribute to local animal rescue organizations.
