David Ward Martin

September 19, 1958 ~ January 29, 2018 (age 59)

David Ward Martin of Centennial died peacefully in his sleep Monday, January 29, 2018. Born on September 19, 1958 in Lincoln NE to Ward and Anita “Becky” Martin, he was the third of four children, and their only son.

Dave settled in Aurora, CO when his father retired from the Air Force in 1972. He attended and graduated from Cherry Creek High School, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

David met his future wife Sheila through his roommate and co-worker Greg Sweeney in 1985. Sheila worked at the Sweeney family printing business, and after several visits to the shop, Dave asked Sheila out. Although their first date ended badly (a pair of shoes were ruined), David persisted, and on September 27, 1986 they were “married by an Episcopal priest at a Lutheran church!”

David was a loving, involved father who enjoyed watching his children in sports and other activities. You could often find him running the snack shack at Will’s baseball games, as food was his passion. He and Sheila loved to entertain and reveled in having people over to sample new recipes. They were very active in the Gadabouts potluck dinner group from their church. He was an avid reader, and loved to travel.

David and Sheila became parents many times over through their involvement with foreign exchange students. A grand total of eleven students from six different countries shared their home and their lives with the family over a span of fifteen years. David treasured the relationships that were forged from these exchange students, and felt that their lives were enriched by the experiences.

David was an active member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church, serving as a junior warden, and working behind the scenes for many church events and activities (he was an expert dishwasher operator)! He recently attended a Quest youth retreat, and felt that the experience helped renew and strengthen his faith. Many at St. Gabriel knew David as “the guy who has a guy” because of his huge network of people who could get a job done.

He is survived by his lovely wife of 31 years Sheila (Sweeney), son Will (20) and daughter Christine (14), sisters Susan (Richard) Riecks, Sally (Jim) Row, Betsy (LaRhonda) Sprafka, and many nieces and nephews - Nathen, David, Matthew, Daniel, Elizabeth, Ben, PJ, Emily, Meaghan, Mickie, Mary, and Patrick. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church (6190 E. Quincy Ave) on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in David’s honor be given to St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Colorado -
