- About Us
Mrs. Mary Eleanor Smith, of Arvada, CO, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the age of 87 after a courageous battle against a series of illnesses.
Mary was born to Thomas and Alma Launder on February 12, 1931 in White Cloud, KS, where her mother had traveled to welcome their firstborn with the help of her family. Growing up in Denver, Mary spent many summers in her father’s family hometown of St. Elmo, Colorado. She attended North High School in Denver and Colorado State College of Education in Greeley. Mary was well known as a synchronized swimmer, choreographer and instructor and was passionate about sharing her love of aquatics with the YWCA and Red Cross prior to her most important job of motherhood.
Mary married her handsome Army Air Corps pilot, Stephins Edward Smith, Jr., in 1958 at Montview Presbyterian Church. The couple had four children. She supported her kids’ performing and sports activities, and when the time came, devoted even more to supporting those of her grandkids, spending many happy hours in the bleachers attending sporting events, concerts and graduations.
In addition to her work with Meadow Gold and Albertson’s, she volunteered at various schools.
She knew how to stretch a dollar, creating Halloween costumes from fabric samples from her brother, and forbidding her children from touching her “favorite” pieces of chicken: the back, and the wing from before it was cool.
In her free time she enjoyed gardening, fishing, cribbage, and keeping up her great-grandfather’s cabin and family graves in St. Elmo. She greatly enjoyed playing cribbage at the Arvada Senior Center with her dear friend, Ada Fern Duke, lunching with the SOS Club from Arvada Presbyterian Church, and hanging out with her friends at The Argyle.
Mary was always known for her beautiful blue eyes and for her smile, with which she brightened lives every day, up to and including the last day of her own at Porter Hospice in Centennial.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Dillman (Richard) of Newark, NJ; Shelly Griffin (Bud) of Lewis, CO; and Rebecca Hersey (Steven, dec’d.) of Parker, CO; her son, Stephins Smith (Briana) of Arvada,CO; her brother, Thomas Launder (Delores) of Arvada, CO; eight grandchildren, William Champlin (Jennifer), Nichole Dennison (Jeremy), Corwin Dodd (Alyssa Westfield, fiancée), Kendra Broom (Thomas), Elizabeth Hersey, Daniel Hersey; two great-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and four younger siblings who were taken at birth but always loved and remembered.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 29th at 2:00 PM at Providence Presbyterian Church, 18632 Pony Express Drive, #105, Parker. Mary will be laid to rest with her husband at Fort Logan. Services will conclude at the church.
