John Nicoll

October 5, 1931 ~ October 14, 2018 (age 87)

John Nicoll passed away at 11:45 p.m. on October 13, 2018 from congestive heart failure at the age of 87.  His request of a no fuss burial was honored.  The Nicoll (McLaughlin / Jacques / White / Burnet) family settled the upstate villages of New York in the early 1700’s and John was the last family member to be born in NY.  He wanted to be buried in the family plot, in Washingtonville, NY, among all his ancestors.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lee, his beloved daughter Stephanie (husband John Reilly), son Ike (wife Lynn Crist-Culman), and son Gus.  This family, along with grandchildren Jack, Carlin, Mitchell, Justin, John and Holly, accompanied him to his final resting place.

He was proud to have been a Marine serving in the Korean War.  “Once a Marine, always a Marine” was his motto.  After two tours in Korea, John attended Yale Law School and graduated in 1961.  He then served under Robert (Bobby) Kennedy at the Justice Department.  He went on to work as an attorney in the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Board before moving into the private sector.  Years of heading the Legal Departments of several banks brought him to Denver in 1987 where he ran the Legal Department of Colorado National Bank, now known as US Bank.

John was a noted lover of history and entertained family, friends and strangers with his stories, especially his participation in a Marine Corps atomic bomb test in 1950.  His wife often said, “although he survived, he did glow in the dark”.  He was also an avid collector of knives, walking sticks, watches, books and knowledge, even mastering an IPad at Age 80.

His family buried him in his Marine dress blues and he was given a Marine Corps farewell in the family plot in Washingtonville, New York.  John was one of those rare men who will be forever remembered and always missed.
